New research shows that environmental pollutants in Store Lungegårdsvann in
1.2 billion kroner’s worth of herring has been exported in the first two months of this year, an increase of 238 million or 25%. The herring export has never had greater value in the same period than in 2009, as shown by figures released by the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC) and Statistics Norway.
Atlantic salmon has less protein deposit due to high levels of plant proteins in fish feed, says a report.
An expert panel has ranked the world’s fishing nations according to how well they comply with the UN regulations for responsible fishery. Norway is at the head of the list.
“Up to 20 million tons of fish are discarded in the sea worldwide every year. This is a waste of fish which could have been a valuable food resource. Norway has therefore put forward a proposal on developing international guidelines for by-catch management and reduction of discards to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO),” says Norway’s Minister for Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Helga Pedersen.
