First catch Dutch MSC certified sole
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the Dutch Dover sole gill net fishery today celebrated the season’s first catch of Dutch MSC certified Dover sole at the European Seafood Exhibition (ESE). Rupert Howes, MSC Chief Executive, was presented with the first catch, and congratulated the gill net fishers on their success in securing MSC certification.

Former recreational sea bass fishery aims for MSC certificate
The Dutch Organization of Professional Rod and Line Fishermen (VBHL) have entered full assessment for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. The VBHL rod and line sea bass fishery will be assessed against the MSC standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. This is the latest step in fulfilling the Dutch demersal fleet’s 2008 commitment to enter all their fisheries in the MSC programme by 2012.

Dutch government makes additional €0.5m available for fishery certification
he Dutch parliament voted to amend the government’s 2010 budget to make an additional 500,000 euros available for fishery assessment and certification. The decision means that The Netherlands have now allocated a total of €1.5m towards fishery certification. In 2008, the Dutch demersal fleet committed itself to MSC certification as part of a Memorandum of Understanding with WWF, North Sea Foundation and the Fisheries Minister. The additional funding will be made available through the European Fisheries Fund budget.
The budget amendment follows a proposal from a coalition of MPs representing all three of the parties that form the Dutch coalition government: Ad Koppejan MP (Christian Democratic Appeal), Lutz Jacobi MP (Dutch Labour party) and Ernst Cramer MP (Christian Union).
