Four international environment protection organizations protested Iceland’s whaling outside the

HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels have finished this year’s season for Atlanto-Scandian herring, having caught all of their quotas and part of the amount they are licensed to take ahead of next year’s allocation. According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, the herring have migrated deep into international waters to the extent that the distance to steam with catches makes it hardly possible to process and freeze the fish for human consumption.

‘We can’t be anything but satisfied with the trawlers this summer. Fishing has been good across all species. Haddock has been the only one that’s been a problem as there hasn’t been a lot of this in the areas our trawlers have been fishing,’ said Birkir Hrannar Hjálmarsson, in charge of running HB Grandi’s groundfish trawlers.

‘Right now we’re laid to right on the 200 mile limit and on the edge of the Herring Loophole. If everything works out, we should be able to start fishing tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest. It all depends when Ingunn gets here, as this time we’re towing opposite them,’ said Albert Sveinsson, skipper of Faxi RE.
