The Canada Pacific halibut fishery of British Columbia has passed its assessment to earn Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for being a sustainable and well-managed fishery. It is the first fishery in B.C. to earn this distinction.

The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) announced today the closures of 11 sponge and coral areas to bottom fishing, as well as the re-opening of a directed fishery for 3M cod (the Flemish Cap) in the NAFO Regulatory Area, outside Canada’s 200-mile limit, and red fish in Divisions 3LN.

The fishermen of New Brunswick are frustrated with lobster aid as the aid package is not enough to fulfill their needs.

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans today announced that the Government of Canada is launching its program of support for the Atlantic lobster industry.

The Provincial Government has provided support for a national program to promote the Atlantic Canadian lobster product. The province contributed $24,000 from its Seafood Market Development Program toward the national program that was recently carried out in partnership with the other Atlantic Provinces, the fishing industry and Federal Government. The purpose of the program was to raise awareness on the versatility and nutritional benefits of lobsters. The promotion took place in key Canadian cities including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. The total cost of the national program was $440,000.

Adjusting with the trawl rules have become difficult for the West Coast fishermen as the goal is to avert groundfish depletion by assigning individual shares.
