The compilation of accurate, relevant and timely data in a standard form that makes it comparable - and the analysis of this data - is essential to underpin the development and utilization of the world's fisheries and aquaculture sectors. This compilation is necessary to generate the data required to monitor the development of the sector and the state of its resources, as well as to recognize emerging and established trends. It requires intensive international collaboration and cooperation, an area in which FAO plays a central role.

The main challenge for policy makers and development agents is to create an “enabling environment” to support the expansion needed to meet this potential.
