As Darryl Hockey steps down after four years as the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council’s (WAFIC) chief executive officer, former Forest Industries Federation WA executive director Melissa Haslam is set to take over the role.
Darryl Hockey had originally signed for a three-year term but was asked to extend a further 12 months to see the industry through the proposed South Coast Marine Park process. With that now underway, he has opted to step away and provide a window for some new energy and fresh thinking into the industry.
Melissa Haslam joins WAFIC following ten years as executive director at Forest Industries Federation (WA) where she oversaw the industry’s restructure following the protection of old growth forests and a period in private consultancy. She brings with her an extensive background in resource management, sustainable development, industry advocacy and a passion for renewable and sustainable industries.
‘West Australians love their fresh local seafood and precious pearls, and I am excited to be joining the WAFIC team to promote the future of the WA sustainable commercial fishing industry,’ she said.
Laura Harrison is in the role of Acting CEO until Melissa Haslam’s start in September.
The WAFIC board also recognised Darryl Hockey’s hard work and outstanding commitment to WAFIC during his time as CEO, during a period of extreme uncertainty.
