The acquisition of Grindavík fishing and processing company by Síldavinnslan was finalised earlier this week, following the recent agreement by the competition authorities that it could go ahead.
The deal was agreed in July this year. According to Síldarvinnslan managging director Gunnthór B Ingvason, the future looks exciting as this provides opportunities to combine aspects of groundfish production.
Vísir is a long-established company that operates one trawler, three large longliners and two smaller longline boats operating under the hook-only gear regulation, as well as running saltfish and frozen production in Grindavík. The company has a workforce of 100 at sea and 150 ashore.
‘Vísir has been a family-owned company that had reached a point at which future plans had to be made. We believe it is a wise move to exchange shares in Síldarvinnslan for the company, and to maintain a continuing role in building up the groundfish sector in Grindavík,’ said Vísir’s managing director Pétur Hafsteinn Pálsson, commenting that there is a wealth of experience and expertise among Síldarvinnslan’s ownership.
‘There’s a lot of respect for Síldarvinnaslan and the company is trusted. We look forward to working within the Síldarvinnslan group and the future looks bright.’
