A highly innovative fishing vessel designed by Marin Teknikk for Norwegian fishing company Ervik Havfiske combines shrimp and crab processing options – and will be the first to haul crab traps through a moonpool, direct to the processing area, while ensuring safer operation and gentle catch handling.
Ervik Havfiske went to Danish processing tech supplier for the factory deck layout of Ny Frøyanes, and were looking for safe and efficient working processes for both shrimp and crab production.
According to Carsoe, achieving a safe and efficient working environment is a natural part of designing a processing factory. In this case, crab processing demands a safe cooking process, reducing the risk of respiratory health issues for factory crew. The focus in the production design has been to reduce the steam from crab cooking. A carefully planned production flow captures the steam and prevents it from being released to the production environment.
‘We are very proud to contribute to this innovative vessel with a ground-breaking cooking process. This may very well set a new standard for safe onboard processing of crab,’ said Carsoe senior sales manager Bjørn Ståle Bjørkavåg.
Ny Frøyanes is designed to have complete processing lines for shrimp and crab.
Aside from the innovative crab cooking equipment, the crab line also includes butchering station, grading and cleaning, freezing and glazing of up to 20 tonnes of crab legs per day. The dual shrimp processing line includes by-catch separators, grading and cooking. The cooked shrimp are frozen in two IQF freezers with a capacity of 22 tonnes of IQF frozen shrimp a day. In addition, five vertical freezers ensure a 20-tonne capacity for blockfrozen shrimp.
All finished products are routed to a compact hotel solution for automatic sorting. Each product type is then palletised on clean pallets to ensure minimal onshore handling. The Carsoe factory deck also includes an elevator to the cargo hold as well as an offloading elevator with flexible offloading height towards quayside, compensating for high and low tide.
‘This new complete factory for Ervik Havfiske is another milestone for Carsoe in becoming a preferred partner for fishermen and shipowners along the Norwegian coast,’ Bjørn Ståle Bjørkavåg commented.
‘After combining the strengths of KM Fish Machinery and Intech International with Carsoe, the united Carsoe team have strong relations and a proven track record in seafood processing in the Norwegian waters, and with an office in Aalesund, the experienced Carsoe team is close to clients and vessels in the area.’
