As part of the contingency planning for Brexit, UK fishing vessel operators are advised to register for an IMO number ahead of the changes expected to take place as the UK leaves the EU and automatic access to EEZs of EU nations ends.
Under the European Commission’s contingency proposals, under certain circumstances UK fishing vessels will be required to have an International Maritime Oorganisation number for access to EU waters, depending on the outcome of negotiations. But those who wish to be prepared for all eventualities are advised to apply for their IMO number now.
Registration is free and UK fishing vessels will have to submit their IMO number to the Single Issuing Authority being established by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) – on behalf of the UK Fisheries Administrations – to manage licensing for commercial fishing in non-UK waters.
Download the IMO registration application form. Fishing vessel owners should complete the form and send it to ship.imo@ihs.com.
Once issued with an IMO number vessel owners should email it to UKSIA@marinemanagement.org.uk along with their Port Letter and Number (PLN) and Registry of Shipping and Seamen (RSS) number.
Fishermen whose vessels already have IMO numbers should submit the details to the MMO, via UKSIA@marinemanagement.org.uk, so accurate records can be maintained.
