Agreement has been reached between the UK and the EU on catch levels for a range of commercial stocks during 2023.
The UK authorities state that the agreement is worth £280 million, and it applies to species including langoustine, monkfish and hake.
‘Our agreement with the EU secures valuable fishing opportunities for the UK fishing industry while cementing our joint commitment to manage fisheries sustainably,’ said UK fisheries minister Mark Spencer.
‘These decisions are based on the latest scientific advice to help protect key fish stocks with the long-term health of the marine environment at the forefront of our minds.’
He commented that the UK government has consulted closely with the devolved administrations during the negotiation process, stating that the Scottish industry will consequently benefit from the outcome of this agreement with the European Union.
Defra states that this agreement follows a trilateral deal between the EU, Norway and the UK on six North Sea fish stocks including cod, haddock and herring, and stocks in other waters around the UK.
The UK has started negotiations with the Faroe Islands on exchanges of fishing opportunities for 2023, having already reached agreements with North-East Atlantic states and with Norway.
