The new dry dock at the Danish port of Thyborøn was officially opened for business yesterday.
After months of work to bring the dock from its former home at Götaverken in Gothenburg, from where it arrived in Thyborøn almost a year ago, the dock is now ready for business. The addition of the dock to the facilities offered at Thyborøn is down to the efforts made by Thyborøn Shipyard, Kynde & Toft and Thyborøn Skibs- og Motor.
The 153 metre long and 33 metere wide dock can take larger tonnages than those that the port’s slipway has handled with its 800 tonne limitation. The dry dock extends capacity enormously and can take vessels up to 6000 tonnes and 150 metres in length with a beam of up to 25 metres. The capacity boost is such that there is real speculation about extending the harbour to match it.
The investment behind the floating dock is more than DKK33 million, and a quarter of a billion cubic metres have been dredged from the harbour to make space for it as the depth has been extended to 12 metres.
The new dock was inaugurated with party yesterday, with many visitors making their way to the harbour to take a look at the dry dock that had already received its first customer before being officially opened – a ferry that needed to be docked for the propeller to be checked.
