Polar Fishing Gear has celebrated ten years of its Hydro-wing trawl doors, as in March 2006 a 12 square metre pair of Mars doors went on board Ísfélag’s Snorri Sturluson for fishing redfish and later that same year a pair was supplied to Sjólaskip for its operations off West Africa.
In April this year, the two hundredth pair of Polar Fishing Gear’s Hydro-wing doors was supplied to Chinese fishing company Shanghai Kaichuang.
‘The doors are designed with much the same profile as an aircraft’s wing, with two steel plates shaped for optimal water flow,’ said Atli Már Jósafatsson, adding that both high and low aspect doors are available, with the Jupiter HW doors for pelagic fishing and the Mercury HW doors that suited for bottom fishing.
Various models have been tested over the years for different methods of fishing, such as filling the cavities of pelagic doors with floats to make them lighter in the water and allowing water to fill the lower sections of bottom doors to increase their stability while towing.
Polar Fishing Gear’s Jupiter HW trawl doors have been supplied to fishing vessels in Iceland, Norway, Russian, the Netherlands and Chine, while Mercury bottom doors are in use in Argentina, Chile, South Africa and New Zealand.
