The Peruvian authorities have disclosed the results of the North-Central zone anchovy season for this year, confirming landings of 2,430,588 tonnes – worth more than a billion US dollars to the country’s economy.
The landed volume equates to 98.21% of the 2,475,000 tonne quota for the season – and a successful anchovy season has significant implications for the fishmeal and fish oil industry worldwide. The anchovy season is important enough to Peru’s national economy for the president to make the announcement of a successful first season.
‘We are meeting today to mark the close of a fishing season that has been exemplary in many ways. As President, it is an honor to address fishermen, fishing companies and the authorities who allowed the successful development of this first fishing season, after going through very complicated years for the fishing sector due to adverse climatic conditions,’ said President Dina Boluarte, speaking on board scientific research vessel Humboldt, alongside Minister of Production Sergio González Guerrero.
The President stated that this fishery supports 12 thousand direct jobs and 37 thousand indirect jobs throughout the chain of production, and added that 294 steel and 397 wooden vessels participated in the season, and that the landing and vlaue figures are key to the recovery of the country’s economy.
‘We are looking at the year of the country’s economic recovery,’ she said.
Minister of production Sergio González commented that the quota for the first anchovy fishing season was confirmed thanks to scientific research carried out by the Peruvian Marine Institute (Imarpe).
‘We close the first season with positive news, because it was a responsiblly managed season and constantly monitored by the Ministry of Production. In addition, we consider it to have been a successful season because more than 98% of the quota was caught, which is equivalent to 2,430,000 tonnes.’
