The port of Skagen is maintaining its position as Denmark’s top landing port, already close this year to hitting its 2022 landing values with three months of 2023 to go.
Figures from the Danish Fisheries Agency show that landings at Skagen have continued to increase as the port gains market share, with landings of industrial species such as sandeel and blue whiting lifting both values and tonnages.
Conversely, landings of shrimp are down, while whitefish and flatfish landings have shown growth.
‘The snapshot of overall progress in landings of fish this year is very good. It is also positive that ancillary businesses, such as service companies and factories at the port, benefit to a large extent from this progress,’ said Skagen’s Port Director Willy B Hansen.
One of the companies that has done well this year is fishing gear supplier Cosmos Trawl A/S.
‘For us, 2023 has been a year with higher activity than last year,’ said Cosmos Trawl’s managing director Michael Lassen.
‘In particular, we have seen progress in supplying trawl gear to Swedish and Norwegian fishing vessels. At the moment, we are building new modern and up-to-date facilities, where even the largest fishing gear can be handled efficiently under cover.’
Willy B Hansen said that the Port of Skagen continues to work focused on developing and improving facilities for fishing, which can also support the green transition.
This includes investments in further different shore current facilities, as well as examining the possibilities of supplying green fuel to fishing vessels. The port expects to continue to be an attractive place for both landings, servicing and new construction of fishing vessels.
