Sapmer has altered the way it conducts its fishing operations in the Southern Ocean, which has resulted in the recruitment of 35 French crew for its longline fleet.
The company takes over the Cap Horn from 1st of August from Cap Bourbon which recently acquired a new longliner. Cap Horn replaces the elderly Croix du Sud in the Sapmer fleet of four identical longliners that were built as a series.
For its 2016-17 fishing season, Sapmer has switched one longliner to four trips instead of three, and it rotating the activities of three others, and this has led to the recruitment of 35 skippers, mates, engineers, cooks and bosuns for the fleet.
‘The management of fishing operations in the Southern Ocean demands skilled seafarers, with experience and great awareness of the weather conditions and the rough seas in order to ensure successful fishing, quality and respectful treatment of the marine environment as well as the safety of all the people and all the equipment on board,’ a Sapmer spokesman said.
