Icelandic fishing company Samherji, via its partner company Samherji Holding which handles its overseas business, has acquired a substantial share in Eimskip, Iceland’s longest-established and largest shipping operator.
Samherji Holding acquired the 25.30% stake in Eimskipafélag Íslands from US investment company Yucaipa at a cost of ISK11 billion (€88 million).
‘Eimskip is a well-established company with solid foundations, experienced staff and an excellent fleet,’ said Samherji managing director Thorsteinn Már Baldvinsson, commenting that Samherji and Eimskip have been active in the same areas in recent years.
‘Eimskip is an international shipping company that bases its operations on providing good service with its fleet across the North Atlantic. We are familiar with the ships’ operations and the importance of shipping in an international environment. This is going to be demanding, but at the same time rewarding to to take part in the ongoing development of the company in positive co-operation with the other shareholders,’ he said.
