Brixham Fish Market last week broke its own records. The 431 tonnes of fish that passed through the market makes it the best week of the year in volume terms – although that’s not a record. But the £2.1 million in sales smashes older records.
‘This was the perfect storm of good fishing, good weather and good fish prices – all all coming together at just the right time,’ said Brixham Trawler Agents CEO Barry Young.
‘Who knows if this will happen again this year, but we’ll be ready.’
431 tonnes of fish averages 86 tonnes per day, and last week on Friday alone the night shift graded 105 tonnes into 5840 boxes – enough to cover seven tennis courts. Over the week, around 35,000 boxes went through the washers to be cleaned and put back in circulation.
‘It’s an incredible achievement was only possible thanks to the outstanding efforts of our BTA team. Our night, evening/afternoon and day shifts all worked exceptionally hard, and they absolutely smashed it,’ he said.
