Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic vessel Beitir has landed 3100 tonnes of blue whiting caught in Faroese waters, bringing to an end the company’s blue whiting fishery for the time being.
Síldarvinnslan has 18,000 tonnes remainign of its blue whiting quota, which is expected to be taken in Icelandic waters later this year. This has been an unparalleled season for blue whiting, with catch rates of around 100 tonnes per towing hour in the Grey Zone at the southern extremity of the Faroese EEZ.
Fishing has been uninterrupted since Easter and production has been on constant progress at the two fishmeal production plants. The plant in Neskaupstaður has taken delivery of a total of 68,000 tonnes, while 52,000 tonnes have been delivered to the Seyðisfjörður factory.
In addition to the three Síldarvinnslan vessels, Barði, Beitir and Börkur, landings of blue whiting have also been made by Vilhelm Thorsteinsson and Hákon.
The pelagic fleet is now preparing for the mackerel season, which could begin next month.
