As a precaution against the possible effects of El Niño on fishing activity, Peru’s Ministry of Production has authorised and exploratory fishery for jumbo squid (dosidicus gigas) for the artisanal fleet up to the end of this year.
According to the Ministry, the main objective is to obtain crucial information about the state of the resource amid the current uncertain environmental conditions. Peruvian Marine Research Institute Imarpe has identified a dispersal of jumbo squid, a phenomenon that has parallels with previous climatic events.
There is a strong awareness that catch levels during this period will remain within the sustainability limits recommended by Imarpe.
Participating artisanal vessels are required to meet specific conditions. This includes current fishing permits, the use of jigging gear and an obligation to follow the guidelines provided by Imarpe.
The information collected during this period will be essential to assess the status of the resource and support informed decisions about its future management, a Ministry representative commented, adding that the Ministry emphasises its commitment to the sustainable management of marine resources and active collaboration of the artisanal fleet.
