Norwegian fishing company Østerbris is the latest to go to the Karstensen yard in Skagen for a new purse seiner/pelagic trawler, due to be delivered in January 2027 – the first time that this customer has come to the yard for a newbuild.
Like the long string of pelagic vessels currently on the shipyard’s extensive orderbook, Østerbris is the yard’s own design, tailored to meet the customer’s requirements and finalised in collaboration with Østerbris with the emphasis on economic operation and on high-quality working and living conditions.
The new Østerbris will have an 86-metre overall length, with a 17.50-metre beam and a 3460 cubic metre carrying capacity in its RSW tanks. The operating pattern is expected to be trawling for blue whiting, and primarily purse seining for mackerel and herring.
A number of suppliers have already been selected, including Karmøy Winch, which will supply the hydraulic deck systems, and the twin 3600kW main engines will be from Bergen and the reduction gear and propeller systems will be from Brunvoll. The twin engine concept is such that for the majority of its operation, just one of the two engines needs to be run to power the single 4500mm diameter propeller.
Fishing company Østerbris currently operates pelagic vessel Østerbris, which was built at Cemre in 2014, and longliner/seine netter Østerfjord, built in 2021. The company was established in 1997 by purse seiner skipper and owner Olav H. Østervold, and today Østerbris is managed by the next generation, with daughter Marlen Østervold Haugland as day-to-day manager, and the four sons Christian, Trond, Olav O. and John Harald as active skippers and mates on board the current Østerbris.
