Contact was lost with fishing vessel Elite Navigator last week and its owner notified the authorities that the vessel and its seven crew were overdue.
A search was initiated, and last night Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey made the announcement that the crew had been found alive.
While carrying out a search pattern, CCGS Teleost spotted a red flare, which took the searchers to a life raft and the seven survivors, who were transferred across by a fast rescue craft.
‘We are pleased to confirm that all the crew members were located. They are healthy and safe on board the CCGS Teleost and headed back to Valleyfield. We look forward to reuniting the crew members with their families,’ a CCGS representative confirmed.
Elite Navigator dropped off the radar in a position approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Gander late on Wednesday.
‘Our entire province is so relieved to hear the crew members of the Elite Navigator have been found and are returning to safety to their families, who have been waiting so anxiously for this good news,’ Andrew Furey posted.
‘Thank you to all the dedicated people involved in the search and rescue effort.’
