Norwegian fishing company Sæbjørn AS has placed an order for a new 69.99-metre combined purse seiner/ pelagic trawler to be built at the Karstensen yard in Skagen, with a September 2027 delivery date.
The company’s current vessel was delivered as a newbuild by Eidsvik Skipsbyggeri in 1996, at the time at the start of a major renewal of the Norwegian purse seine fleet. By the time the new vessel is complete in 2027, the existing Sæbjørn will have thirty years of activity behind it.
The newbuild will operate in similar lines to the current Sæbjørn, trawling for blue whiting and using primarily purse seine gear to target its herring and mackerel quotas.
The new Sæbjørn is the yard’s own design and will be a sister vessel to Leinebjørn, whoch provides both owners with opportunities for economies. The hull is to be built at Karstensen’s yard in Poland and brought to Skagen for outfitting.
The main engine selected is a 3600kW Bergen Diesel, which will drive a Brunvoll reduction gear and 4500mm diameter propeller.
The 69.99-metre, 14.80-metre breadth Sæbjørn is designed to have a 1955 cubic metre RSW tank capacity.
