A world-class fisheries industrial area is to be established at Dqum in the Sultanate of Oman. This will incorporate the largest fishing harbour in the country once it is complete at the end of a two and a half year construction period.
A contract worth $157 million has gone to Omani construction group Galfar Engineering & Contracting to handle dredging and reclamation operations, plus the construction of breakwaters, quays, floating concrete pontoons for berthing and roads leading to the harbour area. The plans are for a pair of breakwater arms with a combined length of more than 3000 metres and a 400 metre quay, as well as a slipway
The Dqum harbour complex is key to the construction of a fish industry cluster where the Dqum authorities hope to be able to attract as many as sixty fish processing initiatives, plus cold stores and other business units.
With Dqum seen as a hub for the region’s fishing sector, this is part of the Omani government’s long-term strategy to boost the area’s sustainable fishing industry, bolstering food security and providing employment.
The SEZ Authority of Duqm (SEZAD) is overseeing the programme’s implementation on behalf of the Omani Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Construction work on the fishery port at Dqum harbour is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2019.
