In media report it was stated that the biggest commercial fishing organization in Alaska thinks newly appointed Alaska Department of Fish and Game commissioner Cora Campbell is a keeper. The press release was issued last week and the United Fishermen of Alaska, which represents 38 Alaska commercial fishing organizations, announced its support for Campbell.
The release states that Campbell was appointed the state’s interim Fish and Game commissioner last week by Gov. Sean Parnell to replace Denby Lloyd, who retired. At age 31, critics have questioned whether Campbell has enough experience. Before her appointment, Campbell was a fisheries policy analyst for Parnell and his predecessor, Gov. Sarah Palin.
According to UFA Campbell routinely displays a depth of knowledge of state and federal management processes, the importance of science-based management and the far-reaching effects of fish and game management on Alaska citizens. UFA president Arni Thomson said that although she is well-grounded in commercial fisheries, she has extensive experience and knowledge in the federal subsistence management process.
