The handover of new crabber Kapitan Khazan to Russian fishing company Antey was a big event, and was attended by Federal Fisheries Agency head Ilya Shestakov.
‘Companies that catch crab must build such modern super-vessels,’ Ilya Shestakov stated at the new vessel’s launch, referring to the Russian government’s investment quotas initiative under which additional fishing rights come with an obiligation to build new seagoing and shore-based capacity.
The 57.70-metre, 12.60-metre breadth Kapitan Khazan is one of a series of eight specially-designed crabbers under construction at Nakhodka as part of efforts to renew the Russian fleet’s catching capacity.
Operating company Antey was one of the winners when crab quotas were auctioned by the Russian government.
Kapitan Khazan was laid down, along with the other seven in the series, in 2020. It is designed to operate in the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk, delivering fresh catches held in its nine vivier tanks with an overall 640 cubic metre capacity.
