Ministry of Fisheries acting CEO Andrew Coleman has congratulated Honorary Fishery Officer Murray Daniels from Motunau, North Canterbury who has received a Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year’s honours. Daniels was recognised for his contribution to volunteer work in the Motunau community through many years of selfless service as an Honorary Fishery Officer and also as a volunteer fire fighter.
Coleman said that Murray has made an outstanding contribution to his community. He added that Murray has put in many hours at the Motunau Boat Ramp over the past 10 years checking recreational fishers’ catch and educating people about fishing rules and responsible fishing.
According to Coleman all their Honorary Fishery officers throughout New Zealand do an excellent job, particularly over the busy holiday period, working hard when most people are taking a holiday. He said that everyone who fishes or dives in New Zealand owes their volunteer Honorary Fishery Officers a debt of gratitude for the work they do, in their own time, to make sure their fisheries will be healthy, now and into the future.
