At 12:19 today Milford Haven Coastguard intercepted a call on VHF radio from the Brixham registered fishing vessel Lerina BM 166 calling the fisheries protection vessel Aegis requesting medical assistance to an injured crewmember aboard. The vessel was 9 miles west of New Quay at the time.
The 49 year old male was hit with a metal bar from the boats equipment sustaining injuries to his forehead causing him to be knocked to the deck and further severe injuries to his neck and lower back.
Following a medical link call with Aberdeen Royal Infirmary the doctor confirmed immediate evacuation to hospital was required. RAF rescue helicopter 122 from Valley, North Wales was tasked, together with RNLI All Weather lifeboat from New Quay to assist with the transfer. The casualty was assessed and placed on a spinal board, transferred to the lifeboat and lifted to the helicopter for onward journey to Bangor hospital.
The fisheries protection vessel Aegis loaned 2 of his crew to assist with communications and transfer of the casualty.
Newquay Lifeboat remains on scene to try and free the vessels gear which has now been reported as being wrapped around the propeller and rudder the resolve has yet to be established where the vessel will be towed to. The casualty, who was not the skipper of the vessel, is currently receiving treatment at Bangor Hospital, North Wales.
