A new net loft is due to start taking shape at Neskaupstaður in eastern Iceland.
Dredger Dísa is currently at work on reclaiming land close to the town’s fish meal factory ready for the construction work to start. The new Fjarðanet net loft will be an 85 by 26 metre building capable of handling large pelagic gear, and will have a quayside supported by steel pilings, allowing vessels to tie up right alongside to take on or offload fishing gear.
All of Fjarðanet’s activities at Neskaupstaður, including the net loft, liferaft servicing and gear storage facilities, will be shifted to the new location when it is complete.
‘The land reclamation was delayed by five to six months due to the loss of the dredger Perla which sank in Reykjavík,’ said Fjarðanet managing director Jón Einar Marteinsson.
´More material was needed for the reclamation than had been expected. But the steel pilings are expected to be in place later this year and then the land needs to settle before construction can begin,’ he said, adding that the new net loft is expected to be able to offer first class facilities and services.
