Norwegian pelagic vessel Kvannøy has completed a full trip on blue whiting on fishing grounds deep west of Ireland, filling its tanks in record time and this time using Vónin fishing gear.
Kvannøy is using a 2016 metre Capto trawl with 56 metre meshes in the wings. The mesh size decreases gradually in each row behind the bosom. Vónin also delivered two codends together with the trawl, one of 78 metres and the other 68 metres. Both codends have heavy duty braided inner netting which is essential when fishing blue whiting in deep waters.
‘The Capto trawl is very light to handle on deck, easy to shoot and haul and runs smoothly out every single time,’ said Skipper Trond Nærø.
‘We don’t have any trouble getting sufficient towing speed, so it’s light to tow. We towed between one and two and half hours each time, so its fishing abilities are good,’ he said.
According to Vónin, the reason for the smooth handling on deck is the Capto material in the forenet. This is a braided nylon twine that has been used in trawls for many years, overbraided with a stiff polyethylene jacket. This jacket also extends the lifetime of the trawl significantly.
Besides the delivery to Kvannøy, Vónin has been very successful on the Norwegian market this past year. No less than six blue whiting trawls have been sold for this season both for larger and smaller vessels, including Trønderbas and Akerøy with 2304 metre trawls, the 2016 metre trawl supplied to Kvannøy, and another to Gerda Marie, while Vikingbank and Cetus are both fishing with 1728 metre Capto trawls.
