Fishing vessels in many Italian ports have been tied up since yesterday, in response to the increasingly untenable situation with rising fuel prices.
According to industry body Federpesca, fuel prices have been rising steadily all this year, and the industry has been working to alert both government and Parliament to a situation that has forced many fishing businesses to stop their operations so as to avoid further financial losses.
A meeting with Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policy is planned for later today with the aim of addressing this dire situation and finding solutions for the fishing sector, which has been severely affected by these high energy costs.
‘We will ask the Government to set out specific measures for the sector concerning the high costs of fuel in discussion this week and to commit to accelerate the payments of Covid contributions that companies have been awaiting for many months,’ a Federpesca representative commented.
