Síldarvinnlan’s freezer trawler Blængur is alongside after completing a record 40-day trip to the Barents Sea, docked in Neskaupstaður where the catch valued at ISK635 million in being discharged – and this is the highest value trip by any Síldarvinnslan vessel.
The catch is a green weight of 1175 tonnes, of which 1005 tonnes are cod. According to skipper Sigurður Hörður Kristjánsson, the trip went well, although the weather wasn’t kind to them the whole time.
‘We were fishing in Norwegian waters and started on the Fugløy Bank, and then Nysleppen and Líksnaganum grounds,’ he said, adding that further into the trip they shifted to grounds east of Bear Island, where there was some weather and they had to dodge for a couple of days.
He commented that fishing was nothing exceptional compared to previous trips, but high fish prices mean an overall high catch value for the trip.
‘This was a fine trip. There’s a great crew on board and you need to have hard workers for a trip like this one,’ he said.
‘We also took a new trawl from Hermann Guðmundsson at Hampiðjan for this trip, and it performed extremely well. We have been using Hermann’s trawls for a long time, with excellent results. This new trawl did so well that we weren’t far behind the twin-riggers fishing there. Hermann is always developing and improving his trawls.’
