Iceland’s Marine and Freshwater Research Institute has recommended a reduction to the offshore shrimp quota for the coming two quota years.
The stock index for shrimp has declined since 2018 and has now reached cautionary limits. The index for cod, a key predator on shrimp, has been high since 2014 and peaked in 2024.
The advice for the current (2023-24) quota year was 5022 tonnes. The Institute’s recommendation is that the shrimp catch for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 quota years should not exceed 4537 tonnes annually.
