Icelandic fishing and processing company Hraðfrystihúsið Gunnvör has placed an order for a new freezer trawler to be built in Spain.
The new Júlíus Geirmundsson ÍS-270 will replace a trawler built for the company 35 years ago, reports Bæjarins Besta.
There’s a scheduled delivery date in late 2026 from Astilleros Ria del Vigo, which became part of Astilleros Armón in 2022
To develop the design of its new vessel, the company has gone back to naval architect Skipasýn, which was responsible for the design of its fresher trawler Páll Pálsson ÍS-102.
The new Júlíus Geirmundsson will have a 67.10 metre overall length and a 16 metre beam, and will have a 3600kW MAN main engine coupled to the same large-diameter, slow-running propeller in a concept that has been central to Páll Pálsson’s design, and which has shown positive results over the last six years.
Crew comfort has been central to the new vessel’s design, and the whole crew will be accommodated in single-berth cabins.
The factory deck layout is expected to incorporate a high level of automation, with graders, automated freezing technology and a freezing hotel for production to be centralised before transfer to the refrigerated fishroom.
