A video has been produced highlighting the work of an innovative multi-partner scientific survey to assess the composition of herring stocks to the West of Scotland.
The YouTube video provides a fascinating insight into the survey work that involved four different countries, nine organisations and six fishing vessels.
The survey led by marine scientists Dr Steve Mackinson of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association (SPFA) and Martin Pastoors of the Pelagic Freezer-trawler Association (PFA), was investigating the composition of herring stocks in fishing zone 6a, which lies to the west of Scotland.
The survey used a combination of acoustic data and catch sampling to investigate whether there are separate stocks in this fishing zone. Such data will then contribute to the international stock assessment process carried out by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.
‘We felt it was important to make a video of this work as it provides a highly accessible way of explaining the scientific processes involved to a wider audience,’ Steve Mackinson said.
