After a brief spell under the Icelandic flag, a trawler acquired by Brim is heading back to Greenland.
Brim acquired Greenlandic trawler Tuukkaq earlier this year from Royal Greenland partner company Tuukkaq Trawl, with the intention of working on species such as silver smelt, Greenland halibut and redfish – species that are usually wholefrozen at sea. Tuukkaq was overhauled and outfitted, and renamed Therney RE-3.
This all changed with the decision for a zero TAC on deep redfish for the Icelandic fleet. Therney is now in the process of being sold back to Greenland and will become Tasermiut GR 1-1, registered in Nanortalik.
According to Brim, the zero fishery for deep redfish means that this becomes a choke species for fisheries on both silver smelt and Greenland halibut. The company has criticised the Ministry of Fisheries for failing to take this into account, pointing out that the Russian fleet fishes for deep redfish just outside the limit of the Icelandic EEZ, while Norway, the Faroe Islands and Greenland all have fisheries for deep redfish.
