Samherji’s groundfish trawler Harðbakur EA-3 is heading back to sea following a refit at the Slippurinn yard in Akureyri.
Built as one of a series of 29-metre by 12-metre breadth trawlers for Icelandic fishing companies, Harðbakur was delivered in November 2019 and this refit saw the catch handling deck, safety systems and fishfinders all overhauled and updated. Work was also done on the crew areas, including the mess and cabins.
A complete paint job was also carried out while the trawler was out of the water.
‘The key to this is to prepare every aspect of this work in advance, as this calls for a great many specialised staff, both from the yard and from service companies, as well as Samherji staff,’ said Slippurinn’s Bjarni Pétursson.
‘There’s a lot of team work involved and everyone puts in the effort to make sure a good job is done on time.’
‘This has been a fairly big job,’ said skipper Guðmundur Ingvar Guðmundsson, adding that everything about Harðbakur’s five-year refit has gone according to schedule.
‘This is a good ship and these improvements that have been made are very welcome. The fishing gear will be back on board shortly and we’ll try everything out before we get back to work seriously.’
