The press release states that ‘Jako’, a fishing columnist and radio broadcaster, will be on hand on Friday, 25th and Saturday, 26th February, along with Department of Fisheries and Recfishwest staff and volunteers, at the popular boat launch from midday to 2pm to fillet fishers’ fish in return for the fish frames (skeletons with the heads and guts intact).
The authority has run contest on giving the frames and details of the catch the fisher will have the opportunity to win a week-long charter fishing trip to the Montebello Islands as part of a Department of Fisheries prize draw. Fisheries scientists can gather a lot of important information from fish frames including the fish’s age, length, sex and stage of reproductive development.
The fish frames will be used by the scientists to make assessments of the health of fish stocks, which are critical for the sustainable management of WA’s fish resources. Jako urged all the fishers to send Department of Fisheries researchers their fish skeletons because it’s in all our interests. And here’s an opportunity for them to get their fish filleted while they wash down their boats, and while the Department of Fisheries gets their frames – everyone’s a winner.
