France’s National Fisheries Committee (CNPMEM) has welcomed the decision by the Minister of the Sea to increase funding caps to €330,000 and to extend fuel support into next year.
‘It’s necessary to maintain a sectoral approach, because supporting only one link, even if it is that of the producers, would make no sense in terms of supplying the markets and consumers,’ said CNPMEM president Olivier Le Nézet.
The support cap approved by the European Commission combined a standard €30,000 limit, plus the temporary €300,000 cap due to the war in Ukraine.
Olivier Le Nézet commented that these measures are likely to reassure fishermen as they approach the year-end, normally an anxious time as this coincides with decisions on TACs and quotas for the coming year.
He added that CNPMEM is seeking to take up the challenge of decarbonisation, and aims to actively participate in the strategy for the fishing sector proposed by the Minister and supported by a number of retail chains.
