Friend of the Sea has announced certification of the Marpesca Group (Grupo Marpesca) for sustainable seafood production practices. Marpesca can now display the Friend of the Sea eco-label on its tuna, shrimp and other seafood products.
‘We welcome the Marpesca Group to our family of environmentally-committed seafood producers,’ said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea.
‘They deserve praise throughout the industry for adopting rigorous control measures.’
The Marpesca Group has a tradition of fishing that goes back over 60 years. The company is based in Panama, but co-ordinates fishing and distribution in Ecuador, the US and Spain. They own five tuna vessels of more than 1000gt each operating in the Pacific Ocean. The company distributes tuna, sole, swordfish, sea bream and all kinds of prawns and shrimp.
Paolo Bray commented that the tuna industry is increasingly demanding products from sustainable fishing processes.
‘Aware of this, Grupo Marpesca has done the challenging work and made investments in incorporating new requirements, processes and certifications necessary to be at the forefront in terms of responsible and sustainable fishing,’ he said.
