One of the key centres for pelagic landings, the Westman Islands has just received its first landing of capelin for this season.
With a relatively limited quota, fishing company VSV preferred to wait for the capelin to reach a suitable roe content before sending its pelagic vessels eastwards.
Pelagic vessel Ísleifur docked in the Westman Islands last night with 380 tonnes of good-quality capelin caught east of Ingólfshöfði.
‘The roe content is 14.5%, so this looks good,’ said skipper Eyjólfur Guðjónsson as Íslefir was steaming home to land its first catch of capelin for the year to the Vinnslustöðin production plant.
‘It’s always exciting when the capelin season starts,’ said VSV manager of pelagic operations Sindri Viðarsson.
‘There’s an eleven-hour steam from fishing grounds, but we can expect that to become shorter as the capelin migrate westwards along the south coast.’
