Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic two vessels are now on grounds in the grey zone between the Irish and Faroese EEZs and inside the Faroese EEZ, although only twelve Icelandic vessels can fish inside the Faroese zone at any one time.
Börkur sailed from Neskaupstaður last week to start fishing for blue whiting, with Beitir following right behind.
According to Börkur’s skipper Hjörvar Hjálmarsson, last year and the year before, the started fishing there on 13th off April and the fishing is expected to kick off around the same time this year.
‘There has been some heavy fishing further south in the Irish zone, so we’re optimistic,’ he said.
Börkur did not go direct to fishing grounds this time, but called at Fuglafjörður on the way to pick up a brand-new Capto 2304 pelagic trawl from the Vónin net loft there.
‘Börkur has been one of Vónin’s most faithful foreign customers, returning for our trawl gear over and over,’ Bogi Nón at Vónin said. ‘The skippers have expressed their satisfaction with these trawls and their fishing abilities. Also since Vónin launched its Capto net twine, our experience is that this material is the number one choice for the front part of the trawl.’
