Vinnslustöðin’s pelagic vessel Gullberg is back at sea after a refit completed at the Slippurinn shipyard in Akureyri, with a young skipper in charge.
After leaving the yard, Gullberg made a quick call in its home port in the Westman Islands, before heading out to search for mackerel. Another of the company’s vessels, Huginn, is also at sea and both are pumping catches on board Gullberg, which will deliver them ashore this time.
Skipper Halldór Alfreðsson, currently relieving regular skipper Jón Atli Gunnarsson for this trip, said that it’s not easy to tell when they will be docking next, as fishing has been slow.
‘We are at the eastern edge of the Icelandic EEZ,’ he said, adding that the fish they have been catching have been excellent quality and a good size.
‘We’re happy with the changes made during the refit. Working areas have been improved and the port side has been enclosed. We also have an anti-roll tank now, which will definitely be worthwhile when we get into the autumn months,’ he said, and commented that this trip the conditions have been fine, until worsening weather hasn’t helped fishing.
‘And we’re now painted in Vinnslustöðin colours, and it looks good,’ Halldór Alfreðsson said.
