After a three-year design process followed by tendering, decisions have been made on the yard to build the new Icelandic research vessel that will replace the 60-year-old Bjarni Sæmundsson.
The order for the new Skipasýn-designed research vessel has gone to Astilleros Armón, which made the lowest offer of the three Spanish yards that tendered for the build.
This ends a process that began in 2018 when Iceland’s Parliament approved a bill giving the Minister of Fisheries authority to initiate the preparation for a new research vessel.
The contract with the shipyard is due to be signed to day by Minister of Fisheries Svandís Svavarsdóttir, Minister of Finance Bjarni Benediktsson, the Institute’s director Thorsteinn Sigurðsson and representatives of Astilleros Armón at the offices of the Marine Research Institute in Hafnarfjörður.
