Icelandic fishing company Samherji has found an (as yet undisclosed) overseas buyer for its trawler Björgvin EA-311, and has announced plans to replace it with a new vessel.
Björgvin will be handed over to its new owners next month. This is the oldest vessel in the Samherji fleet, a 50.53-metre stern trawler built in Flekkefjord in 1988, originally for Útgerðarfélag Dalvíkinga – which subsequently was absorbed by Samherji.
‘We are saying goodbye to an exceptionally fine ship, but consider that at this point it’s wise to renew the fleet and build a new vessel to replace Björgvin. The maintenance costs of older vessels increase significantly as the years go by, and Björgvin is now approaching forty years old,’ said the company’s fishing vessel operations director Kristján Vilhelmsson.
‘We emphasise the latest technology and economic operations in every facet of our activities, and a part of this is ensuring that our vessels are equipped as best they can be,’ he said, adding that in its day, Björgvin was seen as a remarkable vessel, not least for its hull design and highly innovative bulbous bow configuration.
