Síldarvinnslan’s fresher trawlers Bergey and Vestmannaey are back at sea after short Easter trips – each landing a full fishroom of groundfish for just 28 hours at sea.
Their catches of top-quality, large grades of cod were landed on Monday and went to Vísir’s saltfish production, which is now in Helguvík after having been relocated there from Grindavík where there is still ongoing volcanic activity. Both trawlers were back at sea on Monday as soon as they had finished landing.
‘We’re searching for haddock now and it’s steady,’ said Bergey’s skipper Ragnar Waage Pálmason, commenting that the Easter trip was a good one, with good fishing both around the Westman Islands and to the west of them.
‘These was excellent large cod, and the weather was decent, some wind but practically calm seas. There’s been a relentless north-easterly recently.’
He added that the two fresher trawlers have been busy recently, with each completing eleven trips during March.
